Who's the boss: Beijing bound, Yao called out

It's not really about Yao Ming. It's not about how his spends his offseason, his training, his priorities or when he reports to the Chinese National Team. Not really.

It's about image and control. So after months in which Yao went from the weight room in the morning to the practice court in the afternoon, to appearances that represented himself and his country so well, he has been widely criticized for selfishly not doing enough for the Chinese National Team.

The most recent rebuke, sprinkled with Mao-era rhetoric, was offered in the China Sports Daily, an All-China Sports Federation owned newspaper. It could be considered an editorial or a column, the opinion of the writer. There have been other similar criticisms, enough that they led Yao to change his training plans from Shanghai to Beijing so he can be with the national team. But this was in a Federation-owned publication and cannot automatically be dismissed as wholly separate from an official reaction.

With Yao reporting to the national team weeks later than other team members, Yao was criticized for his charity events promoting the Special Olympics and 2008 Beijing Olympics, and for making personal plans, planning his wedding.

"No matter how lofty public welfare activities are, they can't be allowed to take first place in a player's life," the article stated.

"No matter how sweet personal life is, it can't be compared to the exultation of capturing glory for one's nation."

Given Yao's incredible dedication to his training and loyalty to his national team, this diatribe could be considered offensive or at least, unreasonable. But it's not really about Yao or how he has spent his offseason.

It's about control and power and reputation and image. It is about Yao working with his personal trainer Anthony Falsone and progressing far more than he would have had he limited his work to the national team. It is about him working with former Rockets general manager Carroll Dawson, and before that, with former Rockets assistant head coach Tom Thibodeau and making enormous progress as a player. That's all right, but only if that work comes with permission.

The national team would be best served to let Yao do exactly what he has been doing. He comes home a far greater player than the player that leaves for Houston each fall. And as much as he has settled comfortably in Houston, China is still home, still a priority beyond even the most paranoid concern of a sports federation in China.

Given that the national team has been cooperative in recent seasons -- giving Yao time to work with Thibodeau in the past few summers and bringing Falsone to the national team -- there is a sense that it understands how effective and beneficial Yao's training has been.

Dawson changed his fight plans and on Wednesday was flying to Beijing to continue working with Yao, no doubt with the quiet blessing of the national team.

This was a reminder, however, that the national team still wants control, and it wants him to play in the meaningless Stankovic Cup this summer.

The performance of the national team -- even with Yi Jianlian and Wang Zhizhi -- this summer in Dallas and Las Vegas made the team want Yao's help.

They don't want to lose to a team of NBA Development League All-Stars in China. But whether Yao plays or not, they know they don't have to worry about Yao's loyalty. They have to make a lot of noise to show who is boss, but they are smart, too. They know what helps Yao, helps them.

So some noise was made. Yao flew to Beijing. And he'll keep working on his game as he has been all offseason. Everybody wins. Though Yao is in Beijing now, little has changed. But it never really needed to change. That's not what this was about.

这篇博客其实跟姚明没太多关系。不是说他如何过休赛期，他的训练情况，他的当务之急（结婚吧）或者是他何时回国家队报道。并非真的这样。

我是想谈谈关于形象和把控的问题。在姚明早晨从力量房出来到下午走进训练场这种日子过后几的个月，作为一个自己和自己国家形象的出色代表，他被指责为自私自利，没有为中国国家队做出足够的贡献。

最近的一篇批评文章，其中不时夹杂有毛泽东时代的词藻，被刊登在中国体育报——中国体育总局专属的报纸上。当然，你可以把这篇文章看成周刊或者是专栏，仅仅是作者的个人观点。此外还有一些类似的批评声，所有这些评论足以影响姚明让他改变训练计划，从上海飞到北京同国家队汇合。这是总局隶属的出版社，所以实在没法把它与官方的观点完全分割开来而把它否定。

姚明比他的队友晚了几个星期回国家队报道，他参加了2008年特奥会和北京奥运会组织的公益活动，还有，安排了他的婚礼，姚明因此饱受指责。

鉴于姚明极其敬业的态度和对国家队绝对的忠诚，这个诽谤可以视作是人身攻击，或者至少是不可理喻。但是这篇文章所影射的并非仅仅是姚明在休赛期的所作所为。

真正影射的东西是控制，是权威，是威信，是形象。是姚明和他的私人训练师法尔松一起训练的时间远远多过他在国家队的训练。是姚明与火箭的前总经理道森以及在此之前与火箭的助理教练Tom Thibodeau一起训练，然后取得巨大进步。那不是不可以，但是这些训练首先要经过批准。

让姚明做他一直以来都在做的事情，国家队才能最大程度的受益。与每年的秋天离开家返回休斯顿的那个姚明相比，刚从美国回家的姚明水平总是更高。尽管他在休斯顿住得很舒服，中国仍然是他的家，仍然是他最看重的东西，中国体育总局即使有再疯狂的想法也不用担心这点。

鉴于中国国家队近几年的合作态度——过去几个夏天给姚明时间和Thibodeau一起训练，以及把法尔松带到国家队——我们可以感觉得到他们也知道姚明的训练一直以来都是多么有效和有益。

道森改变了他的出行计划，在星期三的时候，他已经飞往北京继续与姚明一起训练，这无疑是得到了国家队的默许的。

只不过，这篇文章仅仅是个小小的提醒，提醒所有人国家队仍然想控制姚明，仍然想让他参加今夏毫无意义的斯坦科维奇杯。

国家队这个夏天在达拉斯和拉斯维加斯的表现——即使有易建联和王治郅在——仍然告诉人们他们需要姚明的帮助。

他们不想在中国输给一支NBA发展联盟的全明星队。不过不管姚明打不打比赛，他们也知道不需要担心他的对国家的忠诚。他们只需要制造点噪音出来，告诉大家谁才是老大。同时他们也很聪明，他们知道这么做对姚明和他们都有好处。

所以噪音就这么制造出来了。姚明飞到了北京，就像整个休赛期他所作的一样，姚明还会继续训练。每个人都是赢家。即使姚明现在在北京，也无法改变什么。其实事实上根本不需要真的改变什么。事情已经不像以前那样了。
